I have been cramponing around the high Presidential peaks since 1971, when fresh out of college I started work at the Observatory.

Jon's Notes: "Here is one of my favorites ‘cause I remember taking it with my 4x5 speed graphic on a tripod in 80+m.p.h. winds. That was a lot of wind load to deal with when trying to focus on the ground glass, load the film holder, pull the dark slide and activating the shutter. One had to keep the camera from flying and pulling the dark slide with my teeth."

  • There is nothing like the crunch of a crampon point sticking into the windswept rime ice above timberline.
  • There is nothing like standing on a summit feeling the fury of Mother Nature's force.
  • There is nothing like the beauty of a full undercast, with only the tallest mountains peaking through.
Winter hiking provides entry into a whole different world, one of surreal shapes and great beauty.

I've been an instructor at WHS since 2006. We have a lot of fun on the hikes and I demonstrate snowshoe and crampon techniques along the way.

Eating techniques are also a specialty of mine as well as lightweight and appropriate gear and clothing choices. I'm also an instructor for AMC's Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue workshops.

In recent years I've used my winter skills to help summit Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker in Washington state and Mt Hood in Oregon.
